Residents in the Cairns region should prepare for isolation before this afternoon, as Tropical Cyclone Jasper tracks towards the Far North Queensland coast.

The warning comes from the Cairns Local Disaster Management Group, with very strong winds and heavy rain predicted from today.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the system is currently a category 1, sitting around 305 kilometres east of Cairns and moving at a speed of 8 kilometres an hour.
