Man Accused Of Lifting Woman Off Ground By Hair

A man is accused of lifting a woman off the ground by her hair in Manunda.

It is alleged that 26-year-old Mooroobool man was involved in a domestic incident in Martyn Street at about 9.45PM on Friday.

He allegedly threw a water bottle at a 20-year-old woman known to him before he grabbed her hair and lifted her off the ground.

The man left on foot before he confronted a 51-year-old woman he didn't know.  She was was riding her bike on Martyn Street, Cairns about 15 minutes later.

It’s alleged he knocked her from her bike, punched her in the face, threatened and verbally abused her before stealing her bike.

A witness to the assault called police, whilst another witness stopped his vehicle, recovered the bike from the man and helped the woman home safely.

The woman on the bike sustained serious facial injuries including cuts and bruises to her head, face and mouth, as well as a tooth knocked out. She was conveyed by ambulance to Cairns Hospital for medical treatment.

Police arrived a short time later and arrested the man nearby.

He was charged with one count each of contravention of an order, assault occasioning bodily harm, robbery and stealing and appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Saturday.  His case with next be mentioned on March 4.
