A temporary venue will be set up for Cairns Taipans home games due to delays on the $176 million upgrade of Cairns Convention Centre.

The Queensland Government made the announcement as frustrated Taipans fans feared the local basketball team would not be able to play home games in the first half of the NBL season.

Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the alternative venue is to be built at the old Bunnings Warehouse.

"We'll bring in 2,000 temporary seats, broadcast lighting and stands, temporary change facilities, public amenities, video scoreboards, PA systems, air conditioning components and large format fans, as well as catering facilities and equipment."

"The court that is being used at the Cairns Convention Centre already, will be relocated over to the temporary facility and we'll work with the Cairns Taipans to make sure the final floor layout is right for players, coaches and fans," he said.

The NBL is eyeing off a restart to the 2020-21 season in December.
