Cairns residents are being told not to make excuses when it comes to slip, slop, slap with the UV level rising to ‘extreme’ levels today.

The warning is being issued as part of National Skin Cancer Action Week and coincides with the UV index reaching 12 in Far North Queensland for rest of this week.

Cancer Council Queensland Chief Executive Officer Chris McMillan says it is important people heed messages about keeping their skin protected from the sun and dangerous UV rays.

"Whenever the UV level is up over three – which is most of the year here in Queensland –  then we are urge people to really look after their skin," Ms McMillan says.
