Far North Queensland has made the top three popular spots among Aussie campers and caravanners, a new survey has found.

A national survey by Great Northern has found Far North Queensland, the Whitsundays and Sunshine Coast topped the list of dream destinations for camping and caravanning adventures.

Spokesperson Ian Giles says more and more people are wanting to get back to basics when it comes to holidays by pitching a tent.

"We found that a quarter of people surveyed said due to COVID-19, they are now getting out and about more often," Mr Giles says.

"The survey shows the tough circumstances of 2020 has inspired Australians to get out more and enjoy the great outdoors.

"Almost 60 per cent of Australians have rediscovered a passion to explore their own backyard."

The Gold Coast and Outback Queensland are also in the top 10.

The survey shows 44 per cent of Queenslanders have spent up to $2000 on outdoor equipment in the past year, and nearly a third of all that expenditure was on camping, fishing and boating.

“Three quarters of Queensland survey respondents said they normally participated in some sort of outdoor recreation activity when not in lockdown with 20 per cent keen to camp or fish."
