Work to do to hit 1500-a-day target at vax hub

Cairns health officials are pleased with the number of locals who turned out to the community vaccination hub despite falling short of their targets.

The vaccine drive opened for the first time at the Convention Centre on Friday, and the aim was to jab 1500 people per day.

On Friday, 1186 doses of Pfizer were administered followed by 1377 on Saturday and 1144 on Sunday.

Executive director of the vaccination program Dr Don Mackie says getting 3707 people vaccinated over the three days is still a mighty effort.

There were no big queues and it was a 45 minute turnaround for people walking in without an appointment, Dr Mackie says.

"It was great to see lots of family groups getting vaccinated together.

"Thank you to everyone who came in and had their vaccine and a big thank you to all the staff, volunteers and local businesses that supported the event."

The hub will be open over the next three weekends. Clinic opening hours will be from 7am – 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 8am – 4pm on Sundays.

"We have the capacity to do more vaccinations and encourage people to register or walk in next Friday, Saturday or Sunday."
