Cairns & Cape police to attend colleagues funeral

A large number of police officers, from the Cape to Central Queensland, will gather today in Mackay for a police funeral for Sergeant Brendan Poustie.

The 44-year-old, father of two, died last week after being hit by a car at Glenella the week before.

Far North Acting Superintendent Monique Ralph says Sergeant Poustie touched the lives of prominent community members and his colleagues.

"The common theme that keeps coming out is that he is the sort of person you'd want with you when the chips are down," Superintendent Monique Ralph says.

"He'd do anything for you.

"He used to look after the young officers during his time when he was Cape policing or in remote communities."

Sergeant Poustie was also heavily involved in the local community.

He leaves behind his wife, also a serving police officer, and two children.

There will be a road closure in Grendon Street, North Mackay, on Monday (June 19) for a police funeral.
