Boaties are in for an early festive gift as Yorkeys Knob boat ramp will be extended in time for the Christmas holidays.  A decision welcomed by the Yorkeys Knob Residents Association.

Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said he had worked with the Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey to address concerns raised by local boaties.

“During consultation one of the main concerns raised was the condition of the existing ramp,” Mr Crawford said.

“We have listened to what people said and are pleased to announce that works to extend the ramp will commence next week.

“Ten pre-cast planks will be installed to extend the base of the ramp and silt material will be dredged to give boaties improved access.”

Minister Bailey said the project was the result of community feedback and when an opportunity arose to carry out the upgrade before Christmas break they had jumped at the chance.

“The ramp will be closed for around 10 days and I thank the community in advance for their patience during this time,” Mr Bailey said.

President of the Yorkeys Knob Residents Association Maurice Milliner said "that's good news for the local people I would think".

He added "Yorkeys Knob is a small beachside suburb, just north of Cairns, and our beach fronts right onto the Coral Sea and we have a boat club and a marina and lots of people living in Yorkeys Knob are boaties or fishermen and they're going to be very happy with this announcement I'm sure".

Mr Milliner said it will give families a chance to get out and do some fishing over the Christmas period.

He explained that the current boat ramp is open but it is in need of some repairs. "There is a plan to have another development later on...but at the moment we've only got that one boat ramp and it does need some work" he said.

Mr Milliner said "it's very obvious when you live here and maybe over a long weekend...the boaties are lining up to get down there and out to the sea, so we see trailers and boats parked up and down the main street".

He said there was some congestion down there a couple of weekends ago, making it clear that the current boat ramp is not sufficient.

Mr Milliner said he thinks residents will deal with the ten day closure.

The upgrade to Yorkeys Knob follows recent dredging at the Bluewater boat ramp in the Townsville region, in preparation For a $1.25 million installation of a floating walkway.
