Cairns Hosting Marathon And Community Run Fest
The Cairns Marathon and Community Run Festival will take place on Sunday, April 28 and road users are advised there will be some changes to local traffic on the morning of the event.
This world-class event will showcase our region to local, national and international entrants and visitors alike.
It is expected to attract up to 3,500 participants along with friends and families to the Cairns Region.
The 7 Cairns Marathon will see five separate events run over the Sunday morning with the Marathon (42.2km) which commences at 5.45am and will follow a course from Fogarty Park and along the Cairns Esplanade and then through Cairns North, the Botanic Gardens and Aeroglen, before heading for the finish line back at Fogarty Park.
The Half Marathon (21.1km) will start at the same time and utilise a shorter version of that same course.
Three shorter events of two, five and 10km will be contained to the Cairns Esplanade Parklands area and will run from 6.30am.
All five events are expected to be over by 11.30am.
Staging an event of this size is a major undertaking and will obviously require some changed traffic conditions in order to ensure the safety of competitors, spectators and road users.
You can find all the information regarding changed traffic conditions here: http://Changed traffic conditions 7 Cairns Marathon 2019
Cairns residents need to be aware that the section of Sheridan Street/Captain Cook Highway between Lily Street and Aeroglen Drive at Cairns North will be closed in both directions between 4.30am and 8am on Sunday April 28.
This means that motorists intending on travelling from Cairns or the southern suburbs to the Cairns Airport will need to detour via Reservoir Road/Redlynch Bypass Road/Brinsmead Road/Kamerunga Road/Magazine Street and Arnold Street before turning right onto the Southbound lanes of the Captain Cook highway and onto Airport Avenue.
