Far North Queensland will see Olympic glory in 2032 with Cairns selected to host events.
The Premier confirmed on Tuesday Cairns will see basketball and football on its Olympic agenda. The region will also host cricket if it’s selected as a sport for the Games.
The Crisafulli Government hopes the 2032 Olympics and Paralympic Games will leave changes for generations to come.
Part of the Delivery Plan includes major upgrades to Barlow Park Stadium including a new grandstand with a permanent seating capacity of 5,000 to support Cairns attracting major event hosting opportunities like football.
Upgrades have also been announced for the Cairns Arterial Road between Redlynch Connector Road and the Captain Cook Highway, as well as the Bruce Highway as part of the $9 billion investment between Brisbane and Cairns. Grassroot community clubs will also receive a share in the $250 million Games On! programs.
Premier David Crisafulli said 2032 would be the Queensland Games.
“These Games are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver an infrastructure, tourism and grassroots sports legacy to benefit all of Queensland,” Premier Crisafulli said.
“Delivering 2032 and Beyond sets the plan to build much more than what’s needed for a few weeks of competition.
“This is a plan that builds for our future, ensuring regional communities continue to benefit for decades to come.
“That includes delivering critical upgrades to the spine of our transport network, the Bruce Highway, between Cairns and Brisbane.”
