Two dead on Far North roads following horror weekend

Cairns forensic crash unit are investigating what caused two unrelated fatal accidents on remote Far North Roads on Saturday.

Paramedics were called to the Gulf Development Road at Mount Surprise just after 7.30pm on Saturday night, where a 64-year-old Conondale man has crashed his motorbike in a single vehicle accident. When they arrived, they found the rider laying on the road, he was later declared dead at the scene.

A 19-year-old boy also died on Mornington Island at 11pm, the same night. Police say initial investigations indicated a four-wheel drive rolled on Birra Rd and one of its occupants was thrown from the vehicle.

The Far North’s road death toll is now up to seven for the year.
