A confronting new survey has revealed a troubling trend on Queensland’s roads and the numbers are the worst we’ve ever seen.

According to fresh data from the RACQ, one in six Queensland drivers admit to drinking before getting behind the wheel. That’s the highest rate ever recorded. Half of those who admit to drink driving also admit to deliberately taking alternate routes home to avoid police breath tests.

Local Cairns police have already handed out more than 440 drink driving charges so far this year.

RACQ’s Head of Public Policy, Dr Michael Kane, says the data is alarming and should serve as a wake-up call for Queenslanders.

“It’s clear from the data we have a drink and drug driving problem on our roads in Queensland. Fifty per cent of motorist report avoiding random breath tests and forty per cent of people are using apps to avoid the police. This is a real problem for us in Queensland if we want to keep our roads safe,” Dr Kane said.
