Hollywood best mates Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are back on screen together in a brand-new Netflix film, The Rip. The crime thriller, directed by Joe Carnahan, will drop on the streaming service on January 16.

A Dangerous Discovery

The story follows a team of Miami police officers who stumble across a stash house filled not with a few hundred thousand dollars in drug money, but a staggering $20 million in cash. What starts out as a major bust quickly spirals into chaos, as greed, suspicion, and outside threats tear the squad apart. Trust is tested, alliances shift, and survival becomes the only game that matters.

A Stacked Cast

Damon and Affleck lead the film as the Miami cops at the centre of the drama, but they’re joined by an impressive line-up. The cast includes Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Teyana Taylor (A Thousand and One), Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sasha Calle, Néstor Carbonell, Lina Esco, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights).

The Man Behind the Camera

Writer-director Joe Carnahan has described The Rip as being inspired by a close friend’s time in the Miami-Dade Police narcotics division, as well as his love for gritty ’70s cop classics like Serpico and Prince of the City. Carnahan says he wanted to create something that focused not only on the action but also the complicated relationships between the officers.

This isn’t the first time the pair have joined forces recently. Just last year, they worked together on Air, which told the story of Nike’s ground-breaking deal with Michael Jordan. But while Air was all about inspiration, The Rip looks to be a much darker ride, exploring how temptation and greed can unravel even the strongest of bonds.

Why Aussies Will Love It

If you’re a fan of crime thrillers with high stakes, gunfights, and characters walking a moral tightrope, The Rip promises to deliver. It’s the kind of edge of your-seat viewing perfect for a summer night binge.

With Damon and Affleck’s track record of electric performances together, this one is shaping up to be a must-watch when it lands exclusively on Netflix.
