Baluchi’s most ambitious and peculiar projects involve crossing oceans in a “hydro pod”, a floating cylinder with paddles, propelled by his running inside it, akin to a giant hamster wheel.
He built early versions with buoys, wiring, metal frames, and paddle systems. His goal in 2023 was to reach London by traversing the Atlantic via this human‑powered vessel.
The Coast Guard has repeatedly labelled these voyages “manifestly unsafe.” In the 2023 attempt, they intercepted him 70 nautical miles off Georgia, before a hurricane struck. They tried persuading him to leave the craft, but he initially refused, citing threats and erratic claims (e.g. of a bomb) before he ultimately surrendered.
His prior attempts in 2014 and 2016 ended with rescue or intervention. In 2021, a version of his pod washed ashore in Florida, about 30 miles south of his intended path.
Legal consequences and turning point
Following the 2023 interception, Baluchi was charged with obstruction of boarding and violation of a Captain of the Port order.
Later that year, he agreed to a year‑long diversion deal: he must allow the Coast Guard to dispose of his hydro pod, stop constructing further vessels of that kind, and complete a maritime safety training before potential dismissal of the charges.
Media reports suggest that this may mark the end of his attempts to cross the ocean by foot inside a floating hamster wheel.
