The 55-year-old said the decision brings a mixture of nerves and excitement as she prepares to move into the next stage of her life and career.

“After 34 yrs of broadcast journalism, I’ve decided to call it a day,” she wrote.

“My resignation has been accepted — which conjures up a fair bit of trepidation and exhilaration in equal measure.”

Gardner said she does not yet know what the future holds, but she is looking forward to discovering what comes next.

“So time now to embark on a new chapter and not yet sure what that looks like, but I’m open to new opportunities and I’m excited,” she said.

“There’s so much still to learn and discover in the world, and at age 55, so much still to contribute.”

Gardner’s career began in 1992 at radio station 2NX in Newcastle, when she was a 21-year-old from Perth just starting out in journalism.

Looking back, she described broadcasting as an incredibly rewarding profession that allowed her to explore stories, connect with people and shine a light on issues that could bring positive change.

Gardner joined Nine in 2002 and went on to become one of the network’s most recognisable faces, presenting news bulletins across different timeslots and co-hosting the Today show during her career.

She also paid tribute to the many colleagues and interview subjects who had shaped her journey, saying their support made the decision to step away particularly difficult.
