146 people have been charged by Far North Police in a crime crackdown in Cairns this month, as the State Flying Squad targets high risk youth crime and property offenders in the far North in a week-long operation.
Between June 3 and 10, specialist police and local officers from General Duties, the Tactical Crime Squad, Dog Squad, Property Crime Unit, Intelligence and Polair conducted the operation.
72 youths have been charged with 235 offences, and 74 adults have been arrested, including a 32-year-old man who put three officers in hospital, when they tried to take him into custody. A 35-year-old woman who allegedly stole a motorhome from a Cairns North property – officers are still searching for her male accomplice.
Detective Acting Inspector Alina Bell said the State Flying Squad is a great addition to the hard work already being done by police in the Far North.
“Our officers continue to target, disrupt and deter those offenders causing harm in our community,” Detective Acting Inspector Bell said.
“Our top priority is ensuring the community is, and feels safe, and we are continuing to take a zero-tolerance approach to serious repeat offenders causing harm.”
Since April, police have charged 651 people with 2054 offences as part of State Flying Squad deployments to the Far North.
