Cairns food businesses are under the spotlight this week as the Fair Work Ombudsman conducts surprise inspections across the region.
Inspectors are checking that staff are being paid correctly and that records are accurate, with a strong focus on protecting young workers and migrant employees who may be less aware of their workplace rights.
Employers who fail to meet their obligations face serious consequences, with fines of up to $9,900 per breach. Last year alone, nationwide enforcement actions saw employers fined nearly $1 million following 760 breaches.
The inspections highlight the importance of proper record-keeping and fair pay in the fast food, café, and restaurant sectors, ensuring workers get what they are owed while maintaining compliance with the Fair Work Act.
