The Australian Medical Association is calling on Queenslanders to get vaccinated this flu season, with whooping cough cases surging around Queensland.
According to AMA case numbers are currently three times the average for this time of year. However, it’s worse locally, with Cairns Hospital Health Service recording 7 times the average in 2025, with 73 cases so far this year.
Queensland President of Australian Medical Association – Doctor Nick Yim say vaccine complacency could be behind the spike, which raises concerns as the condition is so preventable.
“It’s really concerning that we’re seeing a rising in whooping cough… it’s highly preventable and it’s something where if we can get immunized that’s the best way to prevent it,” Dr Yim said.
