Drugs and weapons seized at Smithfield

A man is facing multiple drug and firearm offences after an alleged dangerous driving incident at Smithfield.

Police responded to reports of a vehicle driving dangerously, finding it parked outside a Smithfield hotel around 1.30am on Friday, May 19.

The driver was allegedly found inside the hotel and fled on foot when he saw police.

A short foot chase ensued with the man allegedly ditching a large amount of cash as he ran before being arrested by police.

Police executed a search warrant on the man’s vehicle locating clip seal bags containing what police will allege to be methylamphetamine, two gel blasters and a shortened firearm.

A 45-year-old Innisfail man has been charged with seven counts of supplying dangerous drugs, three counts of possess dangerous drugs, two counts contravening order about information necessary to access information stored electronically and one count each of authority required to possess explosives (ammunition), fail to take reasonable care and precaution in respect of syringe or needle, possess property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence, possessing anything used in the commission of crime defined in Part 2, possession of property suspected of being proceeds of an offence under the Drugs Misuse Act and unlawful possession of a weapon.

His bail was denied and he is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court today.
