Measles case confirmed in Far North Queensland

There’s been a confirmed case of measles in the Far North, with health authorities urging locals to be on high alert.

It’s understood the case involves an international traveler from Bali, who visited Cairns Esplanade in late August as well as Mad Monkey backpackers, Woolworths on Lake Street, Ollies Italian restaurant, the GP super clinic and Cairns ED

Measles is highly contagious. Dr Jacqui Murdoch from Cairns Health lists the symptoms as including red rashes, runny noses, and persistent coughs.

If you develop any symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately. Health officials advise heading to a GP or hospital and notifying them before you arrive to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Authorities are reminding the community to stay vigilant and ensure vaccinations are up to date.
