A man has been rushed to hospital after being shot at a Cairns hotel in the early yesterday morning.

Police were called to the Palm Royale Cairns on Chester Court shortly after midnight Tuesday, where a man in his 40s had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. He was taken to Cairns Hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.

An emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act was issued around 1am while specialist police attended the scene. The alert was later revoked at 3:45am, with authorities confirming there was no ongoing threat to guests or the public.

A crime scene has been established as investigations continue. Police believe the man knew his attacker, who has not yet been arrested.

This marks the second emergency declaration in Cairns in just a week, following an incident on Brophy Street where a man barricaded himself inside a home with what appeared to be a firearm.

Authorities are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage relating to the incident to contact Cairns Police.
