Cairns health authorities have officially declared the recent measles outbreak over but warn the region was dangerously close to a much larger crisis.
The outbreak, which began in early September when a backpacker returning from Bali brought the virus into the community, spread to at least 11 people, including hospital staff. It’s now been more than two weeks since the last locally acquired case, allowing officials to declare the outbreak contained.
The outbreak reached shared hostels and hospitals, prompting a swift public health response, including contact tracing of more than 2,000 people. Temporary mask mandates were introduced in parts of Cairns Hospital — these are now lifted.
Authorities are urging locals to ensure their vaccinations are up to date, especially with continued outbreaks in overseas destinations like Bali.
