Kennedy MP Bob Katter has called out the government for forgetting about North Queenslanders, in the wake of a fatal shark attack south of Cairns.

The founder of the KAP is demanding immediate changes to Queensland’s shark management laws after a 39‑year‑old Cairns spearfisherman, Michael Jensz, died at Kennedy Shoal on Sunday.

Mr Katter says North Queensland is mourning another “heartbreaking tragedy,” arguing locals have been warning for years about booming bull shark numbers in the region. He claims the situation has now reached a point where communities feel ignored by decision‑makers in Brisbane and Canberra.

According to Mr Katter, charter operators and commercial fishers are reporting multiple bull sharks competing for catches — evidence, he says, that the species is far from endangered and is instead “out of control.”

He vows to use the next parliamentary sitting to push shark culling back onto the national agenda, insisting the state’s current shark management approach is failing to protect North Queenslanders.
