Youths injure hotel staff in Cairns carjacking

Two youths have been arrested and charged after allegedly breaking into a hotel on Cairns Esplanade and stealing a staff member’s car.

Police allege three young people broke into an Esplanade hotel just before midnight on Saturday April 26, stealing an employee’s keys. When he spotted the group attempting to take his VW, he grabbed the driver’s door and was dragged by the vehicle before letting go. The staff member received abrasions to his back as a result.

The car was later ditched in Winkworth Street and the group was located in a nearby address and taken into police custody. An 11-year-old Gordonvale boy was charged with two counts of entering a premises, and one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle and unlicenced driving. He was further charged with possession of dangerous drugs, stealing, public nuisance, possession of a knife in a public place and two counts of entering a premises with intent in relation to an unrelated matter from April 25.

A 13-year-old Bentley Park boy was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing, and three counts of entering a premises. He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Childrens Court on April 30.An 11-year-old Gordonvale boy and 13-year-old Bentley Park boy have been charged.

They’re both facing Cairns Children’s court this week.
