The first trailer for Sacrifice has arrived, and it’s shaping up to be one of Netflix’s strangest releases of the year. Starring Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy, the dark comedy thriller throws celebrity culture, eco activism and a volcanic doomsday prophecy into one very chaotic package.
The story follows movie star Mike Tyler, played by Chris Evans, who arrives at a glamorous charity gala packed with celebrities and billionaires. What begins as another night of speeches and fundraising quickly spirals into madness when a radical group storms the event and takes several high-profile guests hostage.
Leading the group is Joan, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy, who believes a catastrophic extinction event is approaching. Convinced a nearby volcano must be appeased, she and her followers set out to deliver a human sacrifice in a mission that blends genuine conviction with increasingly absurd circumstances.
The trailer leans heavily into satire, poking fun at celebrity culture and performative environmentalism while balancing action, comedy and some genuinely unsettling moments. Director Romain Gavras, best known for Athena, appears to be aiming for something that’s equal parts social commentary and chaotic adventure.
The supporting cast is stacked with familiar names, including Vincent Cassel, Salma Hayek, John Malkovich, Ambika Mod, Sam Richardson, Yung Lean and Charli XCX. That ensemble, combined with the film’s unique premise, is already helping Sacrifice stand out from the crowded streaming slate.
After premiering on the festival circuit, Sacrifice is set to hit Netflix on 16 October. Whether it’s brilliant, bonkers or somewhere in between, the trailer makes one thing clear: this is not your typical hostage thriller.
