The release of Hogwarts Legacy on the Nintendo Switch 2 is a big deal for fans of the Wizarding World, and even for those who aren’t die-hard Harry Potter ‘Potterhead’. Speaking from experience, while I enjoy the series, I’ve never been as captivated by it as some. Personally, I’ve always preferred the likes of Dungeons & Dragons or The Lord of the Rings when it comes to fantasy. That said, Hogwarts Legacy stands out as something truly special. It’s a game set in the beloved universe, yet it remains incredibly accessible to anyone who just loves a well-crafted RPG.
This upgraded version delivers better graphics, smoother performance, and exciting new features, making it far superior to the original Switch release. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect way to explore Hogwarts and beyond, the Switch 2 version might just be the magical experience you’ve been looking for.
Enhanced Graphics and Visuals
One of the most noticeable upgrades on the Nintendo Switch 2 is the improved visual quality. The graphics now closely resemble those of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions, creating a more immersive experience. The game runs at 1440p resolution when docked and 1080p in handheld mode, powered by DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) technology.
Sharper textures, better detail, and smoother animations make exploring Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, and the Highlands even more magical. While there may still be occasional aliasing, the visual improvements are a huge leap forward from the original Switch version and for an overall handheld experience better than using a PlayStation Portal.
Improved Performance
Performance is where the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Hogwarts Legacy really shines. Long load times were a major issue on the original Switch and are now greatly reduced, (while not completely removed). Whether you’re exploring Hogwarts, visiting shops in Hogsmeade, or roaming the open world, transitions between areas are better than previously experienced. doing a far better job of allowing players to stay fully immersed in the game.
The Switch 2 version includes additional content that was previously exclusive to PlayStation. This means players now have access to extra quests with a darker, horror-inspired tone, adding more variety and depth to the gameplay. With these quests, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Hogwarts Legacy actually becomes one of the most complete editions available.
Open-World Exploration
As an open-world RPG, Hogwarts Legacy offers a detailed and expansive world filled with activities, characters, and secrets. From exploring hidden passages in Hogwarts to fighting dark wizards in the Highlands, the game is packed with content. While the map may not be as large as some modern games, it makes up for it with dense, meaningful areas to explore.
The game also features an impressive progression system. Players unlock new spells and abilities that allow them to access previously unreachable areas, adding a sense of discovery and excitement to exploration. Learning those new spells are a fun mini game that the Joy Con 2 Controllers handle well as far as the precision needed to run your arrow along the path.
Dynamic Combat System
The combat system in Hogwarts Legacy is another standout feature. Players unlock over 20 spells, each with unique uses in combat and exploration. Whether you’re casting Levioso to lift enemies or Diffindo to deal critical damage, the combat is strategic and rewarding. The improved controls and performance of the Switch 2 enhance the fluidity of battles, making every duel feel dynamic and satisfying.
Customizable Room of Requirement
The Switch 2 version retains beloved features like the Room of Requirement. This personal space allows players to craft potions, grow magical plants, and care for magical creatures. It also provides opportunities for gear customization and crafting, offering additional depth for players who enjoy base-building elements.
Side Quests and Replayability
The game is a couple of years old now but has stacks of replay value. While the main story takes about 25+ hours to complete, Hogwarts Legacy offers plenty of side quests, collectibles, and challenges to keep players engaged for over 70+ hours. These activities contribute to your character’s progression, unlocking new gear and rewards. The variety in these objectives prevents the gameplay from feeling repetitive, ensuring there’s always something new to discover.
Why Choose the Nintendo Switch 2 Version?
Although Hogwarts Legacy on the Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t quite match the visual fidelity of the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, it delivers a polished and enjoyable experience tailored for Switch players who like to play a bit on the TV and then pick the console up and take with them on the go. The joycon 2s are using a vastly improved HD Rumble for better haptics and there is support for motion control casting and even Joy Con mouse functionality. Add to that the enhanced visuals, faster load times, and the inclusion of extra content, this version isn’t just a better version than the original switch it’s actually in my opinion the best version of the game overall
Final Thoughts
Hogwarts Legacy on the Nintendo Switch 2 is a massive improvement over its almost unplayable predecessor. From better graphics and smoother performance to additional content and improved gameplay mechanics, this version offers a magical journey through the Wizarding World and that’s from someone who has no attachment to the source material.
If you’re ready to explore a beautifully crafted world, battle dark wizards, and uncover the secrets of an ancient school of magic, Hogwarts Legacy on the Nintendo Switch 2 is really great, even with all the Harry Potter stuff.
