Bayview Heights man facing arson and weapons charges

A man wanted over a number of serious alleged offences in Cairns and the Tablelands has been arrested.

On August 18, the 26-year-old is accused of firing a gun outside an Atherton home and threatening the residents who were known to him.

It’s alleged the man stole a Toyota Hilux from Portsmith on Monday, which was seen driving dangerously through the region.

Police also allege the man stole fuel from service stations in the Edmonton, Woree and Manunda areas between August 19 and August 22.

The stolen Hilux was eventually found destroyed by fire at Edmonton on Tuesday.

Specialist police caught the man at a Piccone Drive residence yesterday, seizing a large amount of tools and a vehicle canopy believed to be from the Hilux.

The stolen property has bee returned to the owner.

The 26-year-old was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, threatening violence – discharging a firearm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, vehicle arson, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possession of dangerous drugs, failing to appear, five counts of unlicensed driving and three counts of stealing.

His bail was refused and he is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
